Episode #197: TVsode II

November 7th, 2016
It's TV Time again!!!  Join Matt as he acts like your personal TV guide.  Television has been a great asset in learning the highs and lows of making serial entertainment.  Modern media (Netflix, Amazon, Hulu) has learned from many of those lessons and started with a bang.  Even Youtube is making original content.  What a great time to absorb tons of visual fluff!!  Staycations are now a possibility to catch up on your queue and binge some new shows at home.  The quality of the home entertainment flood has increased drastically in the last decade or so.  TV isn't necessarily in its death throes, but it is closer than some desire we imagine.  Slip your shoes off & enjoy some joy over the babble box.

Our twitter is @CinemaSluts if you wanna find us there!!

Just for you peeps - Matt looked up the writers for Supergirl after all:  half of 18 are women.  Shane Black only wrote the 1st 2 LW films (3 & 4 were character writing credits).  We discussed Jeffrey Wright in Casino Royale.  He & Thandie Newton were in W (Powell & Rice), just in case you haven't had enough political input this year (wink wink nudge nudge).

Correction:  Death style contractors are not a thing; Death STAR contractors was what he meant to say (as in Clerks - also applies to the thankless jizzmopper job).

Episode # 189: TVsode I

July 23rd, 2016

What's this you ask??  It's a bit o' TV Time!!

While setting up for a delayed episode, we opted to give you a slice of what we watch when we aren't doin' flicks for you lovely folks.  The majority of these shows are in fact Netflix original content, as they have been leading the pack in creating original ideas and remaking a thing or two that failed.  There are some cable shows mentioned also that Matt recently finished (Echo Base didn't quite get to finishing SOA together).  This decade is fast becoming a new Golden Age of television-style serial shows.

INTRO/OUTRO:  Death Bed Confession - get their stuff on iTunes, Spirit, Google Play, Pandora.  Awesome band from Denver!!

BTW, Chris & Matt are working through the 3rd Season of Arrow.  Chris couldn't get through the Flash, but Matt really dug it (it's worth getting through the 1st half for the 2nd half of the 1st season).  Like Netflix, the 2 shows have different tones, so it doesn't feel like the same show with different costumes (except the certain writing moments when it does ;) ).

EDIT 8/21: Matt finished Arrow S3 - a nice ramp-up over the season; he almost gave up, glad he didn't.  He also finished Stranger Things & it is greeeaaaatt!!!  Stick it through for the 2nd half.

Episode #187: Marvel Chapter 3: Iron Man 3

June 26th, 2016

Is it over yet?!  After this, yes - for now...  but go see Civil War (it's still in theaters as of 6/26).  Our last Marvel installment, finally.  Whew!!  We'll get away from costumes & explosions for a while, we swears on the precious.  No fantasy either!!  We will honor the latest of our fallen cinematic comrades next episode.

Despite some of the back & forth moments in this episode about tidbits & their implications, this movie remains for the Triforce Folk one of the strongest Marvel movies.  Twice the Iron Man films have devoted attention to powerful enemies:  those on the inside.  PTSD is actually portrayed in this movie!  Even those who like/love this movie admit to it being at odds with the other Marvel films, likely exactly as Shane Black intended.  If anyone ever said it feels like a Lethal Weapon movie with RDJ; um, sure... in the most awesome of ways!!  Listen as we go deep into the grooves of this wonderful bizarro superhero departure.

Here's a great promo for IM3 that was almost the episode pic: Paltrow Pic
As to the art used - msg us on FB & we'll tell you where to go.  It's a secret on this particular post for reasons.. :)

Here's a great bit on Fallon:  RDJ Staredown

NOTE:  To clarify our collective thoughts on Spiderman: The boast of the best is the Representation of the character - which can't trump the full-length films, but the way that Karl Urban captured Bones that you knew him before he said his name... we thought Tom Holland nailed it with very little time to work with. Perhaps Matt dug it most.

Episode # 186: Marvel Chapter 2 - X-Men 1st Class

June 10th, 2016

Morevel!!  MorX-Men!!

This week, we take you down the path where the Fox lives.  As it lives, it chokes out so much potential from various franchises & series.  Is it better now than it was when they took hold of Xmen nearly 20 years ago (we know, right?!) ?  Put on some leather & spandex and tune in to find out...  We will say up front that the newer Xmen films have managed to attach new faces to characters that we can love (Lawrence, Fass & Mac).

Apocalypse thoughts.  Matt had fun and liked Oscar Isaac's performance better than the trailers.  Characters were under-used; if we look at ladies, Civil War did it better.  His take was that Marvel lapped itself in the month of May, but really they lapped Fox.

While spending less than Marvel for CA Civil War (see our thoughts in the write-up for the last episode below), it made about 1/3 in its opening weekend.

Episode # 185: Marvel Chapter 1 - Spiderman 2

May 31st, 2016

Whelp - so much for the short discussions for the moment.  We had to break up the Marvel talk into 3 episodes, as looking over the studios took up some time.  Stay tuned for more over the next month.

Spiderman 2 was a powerful followup to a movie that shook the earth with staggering numbers for its theater run.  Was it big, listen bud - it made 114 of 137 million back by the 1st weekend!!  X-men did 54 of 75 million 2 years before on its opening.  Don't let their standing reputations undo the frantic success of their comparative openings. This one made 114 of 200 million its 1st weekend & easily cleared the budget since then.  How well does it hold up?  Listen in & hear how we see it after more than a decade.

As for Civil War:  David & Matt both felt it was a great movie that managed to balance the characters (even new ones) pretty well.  The new Spiderman was fantastic & definitely Matt's favorite representation thus far.  Black Panther is awesome, Boseman knocked that outta the park (catch that 42 reference, hey - we covered that in episode 159).  Keep it up, Marvel proper.  Apocalypse:  we'll hit that next episode...

Episode #181: Epic-sode IX Lawrence of Arabia

April 3rd, 2016

ONE MAN...    ONE MATCH...   ONE CROSSFADE TO ONE SUN...

Peter O'Toole is Hollywood royalty, notorious both on and off screen.  Sit down with us as we talk about the movie that started it all.  As long movies from earlier eras go, some get too self-indulgent and don't necessarily have the writing to hold up in modern times.  If they do, the casts don't always have the performance to make it all work.  See our discussion of Ben Hur as an example.  We can still comfortably claim before it comes out that the original will be better than the upcoming remake with 300-style yelling added.

Lawrence of Arabia lives up to its hype.  Is it lengthy?  Yes, but rings & potters taught us to sit for long periods again..  This is an amazing feat in presenting a world not looked at much in films at the time (how much Africa or African culture was in Casablanca?), yet is somewhat universal and still important in seeing how we argue and fight, sometimes over small differences.
Maurice Jarre: School Ties, Ghost, Fatal Attraction
Peter O'Toole:  Lion in Winter
For those who really want to know:  Matt didn't watch the Alec Guinness version of Great Expectations in school...

For those who love math:  IX is correct, as we accidentally labelled 2 episodes as IV; now it is your fault for not telling us for nearly 2 years!!

Episode #142: Remakes For Ever - Dracula

October 26th, 2014
1931  vs.  1992 *  vs.  2014

It is the ultimate eternal face off!!  Those who thought Dracula was dead were deceiving themselves.  It was just a matter of when.  With many different faces surrounded by black & red capes over the decades, the appeal of the concept crystallized by Bram Stoker will live forever in some form or other.  As the 'other' category of Dracula is punched this year, we felt it was our duty to check out the new blood (insert The Who clip here) to see how it measured up.  Can it cut it??

As the weeks of October blow away, we couldn't go without this comparison.  For those who enjoy the horror, we have 2 more weeks!!  For those who don't, please listen to our earlier episodes in the meanwhile.

*Notes:  the adult film screening we briefly refer to had friends in it; it isn't like we're gonna start a series about it...

The legitimate trailer is up top for 1992, but we did find one comparable to the antics of the 1931 trailer.  See that here.  Also, here are a few moments from the promised Looney Tunes Dracula sketch.

Episode #132: 2014 SUMMER SLUT PICKS PT. 3

August 16th, 2014
The air grows cooler and Autumn is nigh!  Luckily, we've got one more sunny season selection for you ladies & gentlemen.

With this last sweet, sweet helping of Summer fun, we found a little something for everyone: raccoons, octopuses, apes.  Man, there are a lot more goodies folded into these three flicks, but if we delved further, we'd be spoiling the episode!  And you don't want us doing that, do you?

Thanks to all our avid listeners for giving us the excuse to spend these beautiful summer months entombed in the air conditioned confines of the movie church.

BTW:  Here's Chris Pratt rattling off Enimem like it ain't no thang

Episode #16.5: Marvel Week

May 7th, 2012

We devoted this week to hosting the Marvel legacy that led to the opening of The Avengers.  5 movies in 5 days, then a midnight romp with some of the hardcores who hung out this week.  A heavy undertaking and a powerful payoff in what may be the best Marvel accomplishment with Joss Whedon (Firefly/Buffy) at the helm.  Join us as we ring a bell and make you salivate without ruining the exact flavor of what's for dessert.  As a bonus, we include some tracks from an amazing Denver metal band.  The nerd joy must be known, and we sing it from the mountaintops within our deep sea submarine.  Lest we need to list them:

SPOOOONNN!!!
