Episode #232: Somethin’ By the Ladies

March 19th, 2018
  • A League of Their Own/
  • Monster/
  • Hurt Locker/

This episode puts a spotlight on women who direct.  Some amazing work with varied subject matter & genre, this was an adventure in watching as much as discussing the movies!  May you all enjoy it, and may the future be flooded with options for female directors with big films to discuss...

LINKS:  Long Kiss Goodnight, Big, Greedy, Kung Fu Panda, Backdraft & Twister, Mad Max Fury Road, Devil's AdvocateMillion Ways to Die in the West, Prometheus, Beetlejuice/Addams Family & AF Values, Near Dark, L.A. Confidential.

Notes:  Obviously Renner was noticed in Avengers by anyone who missed Hurt Locker, if that needs to be said.  One thing Matt didn't talk about was the fact that Bigelow's movie was a dude buffet with 2 (& change) scenes with Evangeline Lily.  A strong point that women do not struggle to make movies about men, with its own counterpoint that maybe a legitimate female presence is a good goal in a no-nonsense story?  As a minimal viewer of war films, he may have overshot on what is typical for them (after all, Maverick screws up & has to learn to win).

Here's some info on soldier armor in Iraq, though we couldn't find Petraeus' statements on the situation.  Here's something about ears: a frightening thread of possibility.

Get comfy as we bring you back to the softer side of Sears after a heavy previous episode.  We're bathing ourselves in stupid this week, dunking into the dumbness.  Join us a some talk about frivolity; a good amount of ado about nothing in 3 different shades!

Editorial Note:  Though it was a movie mentioned, it shouldn't go without saying that Micahel Angarano was the kid in Forbidden Kingdom.  We talked about him doing a FABULOUS job in Red State, so it was really young Michael we took issue with..  :)
