Episode #276: Outside Knives Out

December 9th, 2019
  • The Misguided (Katherine Langford)/
  • The Ice Man (Michael Shannon)/
  • Logan Lucky (Daniel Craig)/

Behold!  Another venture fanning out from a movie in the theaters to see what else the actors have been in.  Plenty o' Bond films, but did you SEE Logan Lucky?!  Maybe you should - see what Matt has to say aboot it.

ALSO - go see Knives Out with the fam:  a hilariously good experience.

Episode #275: Dark Crystal, Age of Resistance

November 25th, 2019

As the day of gluttony arrives, we bring a binge of the new series based on 1982's The Dark Crystal from Jim Henson.  Plenty of modern attempts have fallen way short of previous incarnations or installments of a franchise/story.  Hoping for the best, this show blew Matt's cursed mind!  After so much time, capturing the majesty & creating a larger plot with a similar blend of awe and fear was not likely, yet it was done with gusto.  Come listen to the gushing, plus the idea for a follow-up episode where we'll dig deeper into what this show represents on various levels.

Episode #273: King of Flix

October 28th, 2019
  • Gerald's Game/
  • In the Tall Grass/
  • 1922/

Stephen King is so legendary that you'll waste your time seeking a person that doesn't know who he is.  Lately, seeing everything of his produced on screen is becoming very difficult - too many to keep track of for a mere mortal.  Clearly Netflix likes his stuff, and clearly the Sluts like Netflix, so it just made sense to do this episode as we round out October.  A variety of horror style flavors with good performances all around.

Episode #272: Dark Comedy II

October 15th, 2019
  • Dope/
  • Observe & Report/
  • Knights of Badassdom/

Some things will make you squirm while you giggle, and some comedies turn up the discomfort knob to 11.  Let's see how far it goes with this batch of movie brew.

Episode #271: Grab Bag

September 30th, 2019
  • Maze Runner
  • Simpsons Movie
  • The 'Burbs

Have no fear of something new - it's just another way to say "Shuffle-sode."  This time the flicks were truly grabbed out of a bag, so it seemed appropriate.  As we hope to start fires in your mind for movies to shove in your eyes, Matt enjoyed a newly kindled flame this episode.  See how these 3 decades brought their entertainment game...

Episode #270: 1 Works, 1 Doesn’t

September 17th, 2019
  • Hobbs & Shaw (Fast n Furious)
  • Mission Impossible:  Fallout

Taking a look at the last 2 summers for action, we compare the approaches to the genre.  A strong uptick over the last 5 summers has brought our expectations for action pieces to an extreme level, and not everyone can provide what some of us demand - as the title shows...

Matt forgot to mention plot struggles for the characters with MI vs. Hobbs & Shaw:  the MI film series has become infamous with difficult entry/espionage, usually with setbacks that are exciting to watch & wonder how they'll recover. While Michael Giacchino has done extraordinary things with the MI theme, Balfe really excels in this one!

Episode #269: Xtreme Sports

September 3rd, 2019
  • Thrashin'/
  • Soul Surfer/
  • Rad/

In this episode we cover some sports Matt was too lazy to ever get good at doing.  Actually, that's a wide list, but these were of interest while we sometimes settle for enjoying them through others or through movies that showcase them.  Incidentally a perfect choice to round out the summer & coincide with Matt seeing the Beach Boys live!!  Soak it in, fellow sluts!

Links:  Logan (has all Beltrami links).

Notes:  Thrashin' is actually 67%, the other 2 are 70%.

Episode #268: Into The Lego-verse vol II

August 19th, 2019
  • Lego Batman
  • Lego Movie:  the 2nd Part

Rounding out last week's episode, we look at the rest of an unofficial trilogy: one that will be altered when the 2nd Lego Batman (& likely 3rd Lego Movie) come out.  Dig in -

Note: The budgets in fact increased with every movie, so Batman had more money than the initial Lego Movie.  The sequel financially performed the worst of the three.

Episode #267: Into The Lego-verse vol I

August 12th, 2019

We dive into the mighty world of Lego as it has bled into our visual entertainment as well as getting stepped on & lost under beds around the globe.  'Nuff said - just listen!

Note:  Matt was wrong as this wasn't traditional stop-motion with physical Lego pieces, it's more like South Park with digitized versions of practical designs (blocks) animated that way.

Episode #266: Summery Summary

July 28th, 2019

Movies discussed:  Late Night, MIB International, & Stuber; a little is also said about Once Upon a Time In Hollywood, Midsommar, & Crawl.

An episode done without the usual prep with movies playing in theaters, so it's shorter in part to go further than normal to prevent spoilers.  Let us know if ya like it!!

A note:  Matt did peek after recording - Mindy Kaling in fact wrote the script for Late Night.  Solid enough for a 1st full length endeavor.

Episode #265: Pile-Ups & the Po Po

July 8th, 2019

GUEST HOST:  GODFREY!!!

  • Smokey & the Bandit/
  • Beverly Hills Cop/
  • Blues Brothers/

We give you a playing in the sandbox smashing stuff together episode.  Steering (mostly) away from real serious things, we just take a dip in the memory hot tub with some fun-lovin' classics with crashes.

Episode #264: Summer Shuffle

June 24th, 2019
  • Sorry to Bother You (Tessa Thompson)/
  • The Hate U Give (Regina Hall)/
  • Addicted to Fresno (Aubrey Plaza)/

Once again we tumble scattered cinema into the dryer & see what shrinks.  Focused on some stars you may see on the big screen this month, we pulled from some recent movies that perhaps didn't get ALL the attention they deserved.

Note:  Matt was on the nose for Rotten Tomatoes critic score for Bother, but even the critics hated Fresno.  (shrug)

Episode #263: Franchise-Fest

June 11th, 2019
  • Bride of Chucky/
  • Godzilla (2014)/
  • Terminator/

It is often said that Hollywood has no new ideas (have you used your Movie Pass/A-List to see indie films?!), so we leaned into that for this episode!  Even those who will avoid the new installments or reboots can enjoy a look at the times "when they were good."  This grouping accidentally became a nice mix of a brand new concept that still feeds Hollywood writing rooms, a reboot that spans 60 years back to the original, & a turning point where some fans gave up on a franchise after 10 years and 4 movies.  Hidey ho, let them fight, laundry day - yes.

Episode #262: Kurosawa I

May 26th, 2019
  • One Wonderful Sunday/
  • Scandal/
  • I Live in Fear/

Taking a look at some films before his international infamy, we delve into the brilliant brain of one of Japan's most influential and epic directors.  Though 2 of his major hits came to America within 2 years of release, the 3rd movie discussed did not do so for 12!  Was it the subject matter?  Likely so..

Tune in while we focus on some genius work.

LINKS:  Yojimbo, Last Man Standing (based off Yojimbo story), 7 Samurai.

Notes:  To the hardcore people - it was in fact Kagemusha that Lucas & Spielberg financed, Scorcese & Coppola helped rally for his later films as well.

Episode #261: Price of Admission

May 14th, 2019
  • John Wick Ch 2/
  • Memoirs of an Invisible Man/
  • Swordfish/

Whether or not you believe everyone can enjoy a movie overall, sometimes there are parts of it that they need to witness that are pretty badass.  They can be a reason to deal with the other aspects.  Does that give you a reason to listen to the episode - uhhh, yah!

Links: John Wick, In Defense of Keanu Episode, (more links soon!)

Notes:  Matt completely blanked on Halle Berry being in the new Wick movie!!!  He also neglected to mention Shirley Walker scoring Memoirs:  She did Escape From L.A. with Carpenter, the Final films, & many superhero shows (Flash, Batman & Superman animated shows).  Don Cheadle in fact has 89 roles..
