Episode #257: 3 Degrees of Chris Cooper

March 18th, 2019
  • Breach
  • Coming Through The Rye
  • Adaptation

So many actors aren't appreciated enough for their contributions to the film world.  Today, we hand out another merit badge for being a cool cat of cinema.

Episode #254: Shuffle Wrap-up

February 3rd, 2019
  • Absolutely Anything
  • Annihilation

The conclusion of the shuffle episode along with the Virgin Suicides (last episode), Matt tackles both ends of the spectrum with awe & disappointment.  Which was which, you ask?  Dunno - just listen.

Episode #253: Virgin Suicides

January 21st, 2019

Welp - another broken episode with the 1st segment that deserves it's own moment.  The other 2 films will be the next episode.  As it has heavy subject matter, a greater discussion beyond the film seemed necessary for all to ponder.  Feel free to reply on any of our platforms if you feel the need or if something felt remarkably wrong as stated.  Matt certainly doesn't seek to be the beginning & end of any topic..

Here's a 70's performance from Heart to show the haze of earlier film footage (even professional level) that the film recreated in select shots.  Ann gives it some great live flair to prove it isn't a recorded track...

Episode #247: Fairy Tales - of DOOOM!!

October 22nd, 2018
  • Company of Wolves (1984)
  • Sleeping Beauty (2011)
  • Snow White - A Tale of Terror (1997)

We tap into the dark world of fairy tales without the Disney washout of hard edges.  A select few can or will appreciate all 3 of these movies as they tap into particular tastes while opposing others in no subtle way.

Episode #241: Numbers & Stuff

August 1st, 2018
  • 2 Days in the Valley
  • The Number 23
  • Lucky Number Slevin

A series we've wanted to do for years, this unifies varied movies by a linking factor of numbers.  Every one of these has significant spoilers that we avoided in talking about the plots themselves, but we dug deep into some of the concepts presented.  Enjoy!!

Links:  MonsterLeonRed (has other Bruce Willis & Morgan Freeman links),

Here is the "Who's On 1st" routine from Abbott & Costello (NOT Laurel & Hardy, Matt's never watched movies from EITHER duo!! )

Rotten Tomatoes Scores for those who care but don't care to search:        - Valley: Critic 59% positive at 60% avg, Audience 54% positive at 60% avg.      - #23: Critic 8% positive at 35% avg, Audience 56% positive at 64% avg.

- Slevin: Critic 51% positive at 59% avg, Audience 87% positive at 76% avg.

Episode #234: No Ghosts Nor Shells

April 15th, 2018
  • Delirious (2006)/
  • Battle Royale/
  • Under The Skin/

To avoid an episode getting into Ghost in the Shell that many may avoid, we opted instead to look at other movies with some of the leads in them.  As a slapdash assortment, these 3 movies actually bounce off each well during the episode - which was nice!  Enjoy...

Note:  The Silenced was the Korean film Matt was struggling to think of.

Episode #228: Better Than BvS pt II - Dark Knight Returns

January 26th, 2018

This week we add a cowl to the cape in the 2nd half of our animated DC discussion.  Frank Miller has been a part of the public fabric since Sin City & 300, but the Dark Knight Returns didn't get the big screen treatment in the same way.  Matt discusses the 2-part animated films from 2012/2013 that present a marvelous depiction of Miller's dark take on the caped crusader.  So check it out - Mikey!!  The rest of you too!

Episode #225: Hulu Shuffle

December 16th, 2017
  • The Hero/
  • Colossal/
  • Nerve/

You want new stuff?  You want things you can easily find?  You want minimal relation between the movies?  Well - all those things are placed before in this episode!!  3 movies that Matt had not seen prior to recording, an adventure for all.  Were they all good? All bad.  strap in & hear the results.

LINKS:  Hick, Natural Born Killers, Tombstone, 21 Jumpstreet, 500 Days of Summer.

PS - Trance was the Danny Boyle movie Matt was trying to think of...

Episode #224: Turkey vs Reindeer

December 3rd, 2017
  • Home for the Holidays/
  • Krampus/

It's a Holiday Surprise!!  I mean, 2 of 'em, technically..

Anyhoo, enjoy a comparison episode about the monthly meals that seal up each year.  We would have done this before T-gives but didn't think of it in time.  Whoops!  2 vastly different films go head to head in this episode - 2 movies Matt had never seen, which was exciting.  Burn & log, have some nog, and tune in for this winter wonder-sode.

Links:  Holiday episodes - Pre-Season Warmup, Xmas in July.  We also did Thankskilling; technically Misery has winter so there must be xmas in there somewhere!  The Iron Man 3 episode has all RDJ episodes done prior, including Weird Science in the Anthony Michael Hall episode (that episode has Edward Scissorhands too) !
Holly Hunter: Copycat, Incredibles, Raising AZ.  Dylan McDermott: In the Line of Fire, Automata.  Charles Durning: Hudsucker Proxy, Muppet Movie.  Also - Short Circuit for the Guttenbergians out there - in Automata link ABOVE.  Also mentioned:  Fright Night, Gremlins, Sequel-sode (Hot Tub Time Machine 2)

Episode #223: Wunderkind

November 13th, 2017
  • Leon (The Professional) (Natalie Portman)/
  • Firestarter (Drew Barrymore)/
  • I Am Sam (Dakota Fanning)/

Often times people speak up about annoying kids (why do you think we haven't done Six-String Samurai yet?! [Also, is there such a thing as too many parentheses?]), but do we always hear about kids when they do an amazing job?  The Triforce is here to fill that void for you by spanning the decades & genres in this episode.  Who did it best?  Take a listen, find out!!

Episode #222: Epic-sode XI: IT (mini-series)

October 28th, 2017

*Some broad comparisons to the 2017 movie as well, but not full-on or any spoilers.

It's amazing how much we can appreciate (& forgive) something we watched growing up until it is done better.  Ooops - episode spoilers!  It's not quite hatorade, but there may be some critiques of this 90's television mini-series when scary on tv was pretty safe.  We hope you'll find the deeper look at it almost as entertaining as the series itself was.  Perhaps more entertaining?  Who knows?  You will; after you listen...

Episode # 219: Series v. Movie - 13 Reasons Why

September 9th, 2017

Does more time = better quality or depth of story?  Can you compare long-hand plotlines to something told over roughly 2 hours?  This week, our answer is yes.  Of course, the series details combined with the topic created a need for a 2-parter.  Next Episode:  To The Bone.

With an already long episode, we don't wanna bog you down here with a description, except to say:  If you're currently feeling on edge, we can't guarantee this discussion will help at the moment or that you should watch the show before maybe finding some help.

Episode #218: Get in the Ring

August 27th, 2017
  • Creed/
  • The Hurricane/
  • Ali/

Finally, the boxing episode you've all been waiting for!  3 variants on the sport of punch.  We even mixed in some stuff about living legends of boxing & how their representation stands up to some scrutiny.

Links:  Here's the '74 Foreman Fight Highlights.  Here is Top 10 Ali Knockouts.  Here is the Costner Speech.

Notes:  Most important:  there are at least 7 statues of Harriet Tubman, some that have only appeared in the last decade.  Funny that Matt is so keen to mention his forgetting character names, as he used the name Carter instead of Porter for Payback.  Whoooopsy!  He also forgot to mention the strength of the Creed soundtrack that features Nas, 2Pac, The Roots, Future.

Episode #216: Epic Epic-sode III Girl Kicked Hornet

July 29th, 2017

GUEST HOST:  GODFREY!!

This week we finish our Dragon Tattoo Trilogy of the extended Swedish films.

Not much to say here -

Some episodes mentioned: Kill Bill, Let the Right One In (Swedish version)

Here's the Blind Melon video that shows why we used it for the intro.

Episode #215: Epic Epic-sode II - Girl Who Played w/Fire

July 15th, 2017

GUEST HOST:  GODFREY!!!

Round 2 of our Swede-a-Thon in honor of Michael Nyqvist.  We reckon a nice asset to this sequel is a continuation of the tone without 'more of the same.'  Different police involved, different dynamic with our 2 leads, and a slightly different approach to our episode as we go into spoiler territory.  Those who listen to this episode should have already seen the 1st & 2nd film, so we take liberties that we normally avoid in discussing the finer details of the stories.

As there are no other movies we've covered related to the director, writer, or additional actors in the 2nd film, there are no links for this episode.  Links for Nyqvist & Noomi Rapace are in the previous episode description.
