Episode #295: Epic-sode XIII - Black Panther

September 14th, 2020

Photo credit: Chicago Sun Times article.

Matt watched this the day we lost Chadwick Boseman.  There was no way it'd feel good to put it out that weekend, but a postive part of grief paying tribute to those we lose.  Technically part of (& the fulcrum of) the "We Need To Talk" series, it tells a superhero story while scrutinizing the ongoing story of relationships among races and nations.  We think it's actually a good gateway to talking about such things with family & friends, which is why we recommend everyone watch it (again) to maybe gain some empathy toward what others go through.

Note:  The score DID win an Oscar, as did Costume & Design; Kendrick Lamar was nominated.
Here is the crucial part of Chadwick's Howard speech.  This might be the most inspiring 14 minutes you'll hear this year...

Links:  Boseman: 42 (also has 12 yrs a Slave for Lupita Nyong'o), Message From The King (also Capt Amer Civil War).  Michael B Jordan: Creed.  Angela Bassett:  Boyz in the Hood (Malcolm X link on that post).  Daniel Kaluuya: Widows.  Andy Serkis: LOTR 1/2/3, Planet o' Apes trilogy  Forest Whittaker: Phone Booth, Street Kings, Good Morning Vietnam.

Episode #289: Epic-sode XII - Zodiac

June 22nd, 2020

Another visit to Fincher Corner brings about a movie we've long wanted to cover.  Not necessarily your typical murder mystery, it dramatizes an actual killer & his actual pursuers.  Um, played by actors of course, but a tremendous amount of effort was involved
to include some of the real folks as consultants.  Check it out!

Episode #279: Action Shuffle

January 28th, 2020
  • Widows/
  • Alita: Battle Angel/
  • Wonder Woman/

Our 1st shuffle-sode of the decade!!  With varying levels of financial success, all 3 of these movies are tremendous to us.  May they all gain the notoriety they deserve as quality entertainment.

 - The Sia song is actually from Wonder Woman, not Alita, so watch THOSE credits with your kids!

Episode #277: Astounding Sound

December 23rd, 2019
  • A Quiet Place
  • Mother!
  • Raging Bull

Do you hear what I hear?  What sound are we talkin' aboot?  Listen in, get it sorted!  2 amazing movies, and a 3rd one that is very popular... (grin)

Episode #267: Into The Lego-verse vol I

August 12th, 2019

We dive into the mighty world of Lego as it has bled into our visual entertainment as well as getting stepped on & lost under beds around the globe.  'Nuff said - just listen!

Note:  Matt was wrong as this wasn't traditional stop-motion with physical Lego pieces, it's more like South Park with digitized versions of practical designs (blocks) animated that way.

Links:  Wet Hot Amer. Summer, Zack & Miri, Passengers (has Guardians 2 episode link, Guardians (+ 22 Jump st), 1m Ways to Die in West, Krull, Red (+Batman Begins, Excalibur, A-Team,  Morgan Freeman links), Wes Anderson episode.

Episode #261: Price of Admission

May 14th, 2019
  • John Wick Ch 2/
  • Memoirs of an Invisible Man/
  • Swordfish/

Whether or not you believe everyone can enjoy a movie overall, sometimes there are parts of it that they need to witness that are pretty badass.  They can be a reason to deal with the other aspects.  Does that give you a reason to listen to the episode - uhhh, yah!

Links: John Wick, In Defense of Keanu Episode, (more links soon!)

Notes:  Matt completely blanked on Halle Berry being in the new Wick movie!!!  He also neglected to mention Shirley Walker scoring Memoirs:  She did Escape From L.A. with Carpenter, the Final films, & many superhero shows (Flash, Batman & Superman animated shows).  Don Cheadle in fact has 89 roles..

Episode #259: Movie Theatah Roundup I

April 15th, 2019
  • Wandering Earth
  • Green Book
  • Arctic
  • Alita Battle Angel
  • Captive State
  • Gloria Bell
  • Us
  • Hotel Mumbai
  • Shazam
  • Hellboy

Bite-sized glimpses of flicks in theaters at the moment as Matt maximizes his A-List membership.  Trying this on as a once-in-a-while departure, so let us know what you think!!

Notes:  Just under $6 million of the total earnings for Wandering Earth was U.S. ticket sales, not $2 million.  It still deserves more of our money...
As a modern comparison of current film budgets - Creed II, a boxing movie, spent the same amount of money as Hellboy.

Episode #258: PrEnd Game

April 2nd, 2019
  • Room (Brie Larson)
  • Atomic Blonde (James McAvoy)
  • The Soloist (Robert Downey, Jr.)

The title doesn't work as well as "Prefinity War," but hopefully you get the point...  This time we're giving you other movies some MCU stars have been in.  Xavier isn't likely in Endgame, but the uncertainty of X-men & their current stars is a hot topic with Fox purchased by Disney so a crossover is now possible.

3 very different genres.  3 splendid examples of how these actors are more than merely their Marvel counterparts.  We even included a movie based on real people.  Enjoy the departure as we finally take a break from directly talking about Marvel!!

Episode #254: Shuffle Wrap-up

February 3rd, 2019
  • Absolutely Anything
  • Annihilation

The conclusion of the shuffle episode along with the Virgin Suicides (last episode), Matt tackles both ends of the spectrum with awe & disappointment.  Which was which, you ask?  Dunno - just listen.

Links:  Mixed Nuts, Shaun of the Dead, 22 Jump St, House of D, Hook, Good Morning Vietnam.  More links soon!!

Note:  my favorite mistake ever with Gavin Scott, who wrote a 2009 Beauty/Beast movie rated 32% on IMDB!!

Episode #252: Stocking Stuffer-sode

January 6th, 2019

A Plot:  Mixed Nuts

B Plot:  Batman Returns

C Plot:  Creed

D Plot:  Into the Spiderverse

A tasty treat to sum up the remainder of 2018 for the Sluts.  1 movie is the focus, but the others are touched upon for recommendation or due credit purposes.  Not an epic-sode, other movies really needed to be in there to give it some heft.  May the new year bring you what you deserve & more lovelies!!!

December 3rd, 2018

GUEST HOST:  GODFREY!!!

  • X-Men:  Days of Future Past

a 2nd serving of service to Stan, we talk aboot the sequel to 1st Class by Matthew Vaughn (link for that HERE).  Starting with The Wolverine last month, we have 1 more entree coming up.  Come back to us for a strong finish.  Though you do have to clean your plate before we offer dessert...

Episode #249: Our SNIKT to Stan I

November 20th, 2018
  • The Wolverine

Welp - We reckon it's bound to happen that Marvel movie talks run long.  It happened before & here we are again.  The good news:  you're gonna hear a lot about Stan Lee's good works over the next 3 weeks.  The bad news:  you'll have to wait to see what the other 2 movies are (though it shouldn't be hard to guess).  Enjoy our 1st of 3 excavations into the Major Man of Marvel that has brought us so much joy, entertainment, and thought-provoking narratives through superhero allegory.  This one ends abruptly as it was SUPPOSED to just be 1 episode..  we opted out of further recording to just push this baby out before the other triplets come.

Links:  Ottman, Hurt Locker (Beltrami)

Notes:  Matt hit a triple-oopsie with Ben Foster, messing up the title for Panic Room - which is also Leto, not Foster, then mixing up Firewall with Hostage.  This is why we take notes so we don't screw up on the fly!  The Total Recall we are cutting down is the remake, not the original.  This IS Rila Fukushima's 1st film!  ooh ooh - Matt also screwed up the shakuhachi flute for the shamisen that the Yoshida Brothers use.  Negative points all around!

Episode #237: Stranger Things 2

June 4th, 2018

Stranger Things was a mammoth of a series when it debuted.  It seems most saw the 2nd season when it appeared, the the hubbub quickly died down despite it doing a pretty durned fantastic job in creating another strong arc for the characters we've come to love & some noobs as well.  We wanted to dig deeper than Matt's last TVsode when he almost scratched the surface with a drive-by thumbs up for ST 2.  Really looking at the overall structure, it deserves far more credit than it got for changing it up without becoming something else.

Episode #235: Pre-Finity War

May 1st, 2018
  • Deadpool
  • Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2
  • Spider-Man Homecoming

Feel the need for more comicbook movie discussion?  Hopefully, cause we sure did!!  Dig in as we load more Marvel onto our fork (with a dash of Fox in there, too!).  Are these 3 necessary before seeing Inifinity War?  No - but they are good examples of continued strength as Marvel keeps pushing heroes our way; also, all but Deadpool are almost surely in I-War.

Something Matt forgot to mention aboot GotG2: overuse of single songs is a thing & was pushed with 1 especially - even as it applies to your story, don't overdo it!!  BUT here's a link to a fun sdtk video with The Hoff!

Other Links:  Ryan Reynolds: Van WilderTJ Miller: Train ur DragonRhett Reese/Paul Wernick: ZombielandTom Holkenborg (XL Junkie):  Fury Road.  Tyler Bates is also discussed in Dawn of the Dead & John Wick in the Zombieland & Fury Road links here.  Iron Man 3 has Downey links.  Michael Keaton: BatmanBatman Returns, Spotlight, Robocop, Beetlejuice, Much Ado About Nothing.
