Episode #259: Movie Theatah Roundup I

April 15th, 2019
  • Wandering Earth
  • Green Book
  • Arctic
  • Alita Battle Angel
  • Captive State
  • Gloria Bell
  • Us
  • Hotel Mumbai
  • Shazam
  • Hellboy

Bite-sized glimpses of flicks in theaters at the moment as Matt maximizes his A-List membership.  Trying this on as a once-in-a-while departure, so let us know what you think!!

Notes:  Just under $6 million of the total earnings for Wandering Earth was U.S. ticket sales, not $2 million.  It still deserves more of our money...
As a modern comparison of current film budgets - Creed II, a boxing movie, spent the same amount of money as Hellboy.

Episode #258: PrEnd Game

April 2nd, 2019
  • Room (Brie Larson)
  • Atomic Blonde (James McAvoy)
  • The Soloist (Robert Downey, Jr.)

The title doesn't work as well as "Prefinity War," but hopefully you get the point...  This time we're giving you other movies some MCU stars have been in.  Xavier isn't likely in Endgame, but the uncertainty of X-men & their current stars is a hot topic with Fox purchased by Disney so a crossover is now possible.

3 very different genres.  3 splendid examples of how these actors are more than merely their Marvel counterparts.  We even included a movie based on real people.  Enjoy the departure as we finally take a break from directly talking about Marvel!!

Episode #252: Stocking Stuffer-sode

January 6th, 2019

A Plot:  Mixed Nuts

B Plot:  Batman Returns

C Plot:  Creed

D Plot:  Into the Spiderverse

A tasty treat to sum up the remainder of 2018 for the Sluts.  1 movie is the focus, but the others are touched upon for recommendation or due credit purposes.  Not an epic-sode, other movies really needed to be in there to give it some heft.  May the new year bring you what you deserve & more lovelies!!!

Episode #251: Our SNIKT to Stan III

Do we need to say anything else?!  The answer's NO, Bub.

Episode #250: Our SNIKT to Stan II

December 3rd, 2018

GUEST HOST:  GODFREY!!!

  • X-Men:  Days of Future Past

a 2nd serving of service to Stan, we talk aboot the sequel to 1st Class by Matthew Vaughn (link for that HERE).  Starting with The Wolverine last month, we have 1 more entree coming up.  Come back to us for a strong finish.  Though you do have to clean your plate before we offer dessert...

Episode #249: Our SNIKT to Stan I

November 20th, 2018
  • The Wolverine

Welp - We reckon it's bound to happen that Marvel movie talks run long.  It happened before & here we are again.  The good news:  you're gonna hear a lot about Stan Lee's good works over the next 3 weeks.  The bad news:  you'll have to wait to see what the other 2 movies are (though it shouldn't be hard to guess).  Enjoy our 1st of 3 excavations into the Major Man of Marvel that has brought us so much joy, entertainment, and thought-provoking narratives through superhero allegory.  This one ends abruptly as it was SUPPOSED to just be 1 episode..  we opted out of further recording to just push this baby out before the other triplets come.

Links:  Ottman, Hurt Locker (Beltrami)

Notes:  Matt hit a triple-oopsie with Ben Foster, messing up the title for Panic Room - which is also Leto, not Foster, then mixing up Firewall with Hostage.  This is why we take notes so we don't screw up on the fly!  The Total Recall we are cutting down is the remake, not the original.  This IS Rila Fukushima's 1st film!  ooh ooh - Matt also screwed up the shakuhachi flute for the shamisen that the Yoshida Brothers use.  Negative points all around!

Episode #237: Stranger Things 2

June 4th, 2018

Stranger Things was a mammoth of a series when it debuted.  It seems most saw the 2nd season when it appeared, the the hubbub quickly died down despite it doing a pretty durned fantastic job in creating another strong arc for the characters we've come to love & some noobs as well.  We wanted to dig deeper than Matt's last TVsode when he almost scratched the surface with a drive-by thumbs up for ST 2.  Really looking at the overall structure, it deserves far more credit than it got for changing it up without becoming something else.

Episode #235: Pre-Finity War

May 1st, 2018
  • Deadpool
  • Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2
  • Spider-Man Homecoming

Feel the need for more comicbook movie discussion?  Hopefully, cause we sure did!!  Dig in as we load more Marvel onto our fork (with a dash of Fox in there, too!).  Are these 3 necessary before seeing Inifinity War?  No - but they are good examples of continued strength as Marvel keeps pushing heroes our way; also, all but Deadpool are almost surely in I-War.

Something Matt forgot to mention aboot GotG2: overuse of single songs is a thing & was pushed with 1 especially - even as it applies to your story, don't overdo it!!  BUT here's a link to a fun sdtk video with The Hoff!

Other Links:  Ryan Reynolds: Van Wilder.  TJ Miller: Train ur Dragon.  Rhett Reese/Paul Wernick: Zombieland.  Tom Holkenborg (XL Junkie):  Fury Road.  Tyler Bates is also discussed in Dawn of the Dead & John Wick in the last 2 links here.  Iron Man 3 has Downey links.  Michael Keaton: Batman Returns, Spotlight, Robocop, Beetlejuice, Much Ado About Nothing.

Kurt Russell: Bone TomahawkThe ThingStargate (has all other links).  Bradley Cooper: A-Team, Wet Hot American Summer.  Chris Pratt: briefly discussed in Jurassic World.  Zoe Saldana:  original GotG.

Episode #230: Ready Panther 2

February 17th, 2018

GUEST HOST:  GODFREY!!!

Hotel Rwanda

Maybe the most serious we've allowed ourselves to get, as this movie is based on actual events.  Though not an easy watch, it is of great importance that people know this story as a part of the larger chapter in our history where so many were murdered & no one came to their aid.  Chock full of strong performers, this is somewhat relevant to Black Panther in ways we did not anticipate.

We also give a brief response to Black Panther in this episode.  Go See It!!

LINKS      Cheadle as Captain Planet, also pt II, pt III, & pt IV (which we didn't even know about!!!).  The Slap Trailer.  Also, here is a Slap spoof Trailer.   Matt could not find the Hotel Rwanda Featurettes on YouTube.

Episode #229: Ready Panther 1

February 10th, 2018

GUEST HOST:  GODFREY!!

  • Captain America: Civil War/
  • Message From The King/

As we before the wave of badassery that is Black Panther coming out next week, we chose to tip the meter back over to Marvel side after looking at some of the DC animated films.  We were gonna do a Michael B Jordan film, but we stumbled on another with Chadwick Boseman while searching.  What luck?!  So this episode is essentially a chunk of Chad, & next Saturday we'll follow up with a chunk of Chead(le).  Join us, won't you?

Next weekend, we'll hopefully have a few words to offer about the Black Panther flick also!!

Episode #228: Better Than BvS pt II - Dark Knight Returns

January 26th, 2018

This week we add a cowl to the cape in the 2nd half of our animated DC discussion.  Frank Miller has been a part of the public fabric since Sin City & 300, but the Dark Knight Returns didn't get the big screen treatment in the same way.  Matt discusses the 2-part animated films from 2012/2013 that present a marvelous depiction of Miller's dark take on the caped crusader.  So check it out - Mikey!!  The rest of you too!

Episode # 227: Better Than BvS pt I - Superman Doomsday

January 15th, 2018

As superheroes are in the driver's seat for modern movie theater goers, so has the cartoon world reached a Renaissance in legitimacy for movie and series format.  Special effects have reached a near zenith where you'd expect a live-action version to be the best experience.  Is it though?  Over the next 2 episodes, Matt is here to tell you the answer is no.

Doomsday appeared in an interesting time slot:  before Iron Man & Dark Knight melted our child brains & created the superhero film series market, the need for capes & fancy suits had slept for almost 2 decades.  Our Sidelined Superheroes episode looked at the lack of lasting hype for Batman Begins in 2005.  Both DC titans had been dormant since the 90's except for tv, and cartoons are for kids, right?  Not anymore...

Next episode we'll do both parts of The Dark Knight Returns from 2012!

Episode #197: TVsode II

November 7th, 2016
It's TV Time again!!!  Join Matt as he acts like your personal TV guide.  Television has been a great asset in learning the highs and lows of making serial entertainment.  Modern media (Netflix, Amazon, Hulu) has learned from many of those lessons and started with a bang.  Even Youtube is making original content.  What a great time to absorb tons of visual fluff!!  Staycations are now a possibility to catch up on your queue and binge some new shows at home.  The quality of the home entertainment flood has increased drastically in the last decade or so.  TV isn't necessarily in its death throes, but it is closer than some desire we imagine.  Slip your shoes off & enjoy some joy over the babble box.

Shows discussed:  Orange is the new Black, Daredevil, Luke Cage, The Get Down, Arrow, Flash, Supergirl, The Blacklist, Bojack Horseman, Bob's Burgers, The Ranch, Fargo, Dusk til Dawn, Ash vs Evil Dead, Preacher pilot, Lethal Weapon, West World, .

Our twitter is @CinemaSluts if you wanna find us there!!

Just for you peeps - Matt looked up the writers for Supergirl after all:  half of 18 are women.  Shane Black only wrote the 1st 2 LW films (3 & 4 were character writing credits).  We discussed Jeffrey Wright in Casino Royale.  He & Thandie Newton were in W (Powell & Rice), just in case you haven't had enough political input this year (wink wink nudge nudge).

Correction:  Death style contractors are not a thing; Death STAR contractors was what he meant to say (as in Clerks - also applies to the thankless jizzmopper job).

Episode # 189: TVsode I

July 23rd, 2016

What's this you ask??  It's a bit o' TV Time!!

While setting up for a delayed episode, we opted to give you a slice of what we watch when we aren't doin' flicks for you lovely folks.  The majority of these shows are in fact Netflix original content, as they have been leading the pack in creating original ideas and remaking a thing or two that failed.  There are some cable shows mentioned also that Matt recently finished (Echo Base didn't quite get to finishing SOA together).  This decade is fast becoming a new Golden Age of television-style serial shows.

INTRO/OUTRO:  Death Bed Confession - get their stuff on iTunes, Spirit, Google Play, Pandora.  Awesome band from Denver!!

BTW, Chris & Matt are working through the 3rd Season of Arrow.  Chris couldn't get through the Flash, but Matt really dug it (it's worth getting through the 1st half for the 2nd half of the 1st season).  Like Netflix, the 2 shows have different tones, so it doesn't feel like the same show with different costumes (except the certain writing moments when it does ;) ).

EDIT 8/21: Matt finished Arrow S3 - a nice ramp-up over the season; he almost gave up, glad he didn't.  He also finished Stranger Things & it is greeeaaaatt!!!  Stick it through for the 2nd half.

Episode #187: Marvel Chapter 3: Iron Man 3

June 26th, 2016

Featured Art:  Jeffrey Veregge.  Buy T-shirts with some of his art here!!  https://shop.fingersduke.com/collections/jeffrey-veregge?page=1

Is it over yet?!  After this, yes - for now...  but go see Civil War (it's still in theaters as of 6/26).  Our last Marvel installment, finally.  Whew!!  We'll get away from costumes & explosions for a while, we swears on the precious.  No fantasy either!!  We will honor the latest of our fallen cinematic comrades next episode.

Despite some of the back & forth moments in this episode about tidbits & their implications, this movie remains for the Triforce Folk one of the strongest Marvel movies.  Twice the Iron Man films have devoted attention to powerful enemies:  those on the inside.  PTSD is actually portrayed in this movie!  Even those who like/love this movie admit to it being at odds with the other Marvel films, likely exactly as Shane Black intended.  If anyone ever said it feels like a Lethal Weapon movie with RDJ; um, sure... in the most awesome of ways!!  Listen as we go deep into the grooves of this wonderful bizarro superhero departure.

Here's a great promo for IM3 that was almost the episode pic: Paltrow Pic
As to the art used - msg us on FB & we'll tell you where to go.  It's a secret on this particular post for reasons.. :)

Here's a great bit on Fallon:  RDJ Staredown

NOTE:  To clarify our collective thoughts on Spiderman: The boast of the best is the Representation of the character - which can't trump the full-length films, but the way that Karl Urban captured Bones that you knew him before he said his name... we thought Tom Holland nailed it with very little time to work with. Perhaps Matt dug it most.
