Episode #261: Price of Admission

May 14th, 2019
  • John Wick Ch 2/
  • Memoirs of an Invisible Man/
  • Swordfish/

Whether or not you believe everyone can enjoy a movie overall, sometimes there are parts of it that they need to witness that are pretty badass.  They can be a reason to deal with the other aspects.  Does that give you a reason to listen to the episode - uhhh, yah!

Links: John Wick, In Defense of Keanu Episode, (more links soon!)

Notes:  Matt completely blanked on Halle Berry being in the new Wick movie!!!  He also neglected to mention Shirley Walker scoring Memoirs:  She did Escape From L.A. with Carpenter, the Final films, & many superhero shows (Flash, Batman & Superman animated shows).  Don Cheadle in fact has 89 roles..

Episode #259: Movie Theatah Roundup I

April 15th, 2019
  • Wandering Earth
  • Green Book
  • Arctic
  • Alita Battle Angel
  • Captive State
  • Gloria Bell
  • Us
  • Hotel Mumbai
  • Shazam
  • Hellboy

Bite-sized glimpses of flicks in theaters at the moment as Matt maximizes his A-List membership.  Trying this on as a once-in-a-while departure, so let us know what you think!!

Notes:  Just under $6 million of the total earnings for Wandering Earth was U.S. ticket sales, not $2 million.  It still deserves more of our money...
As a modern comparison of current film budgets - Creed II, a boxing movie, spent the same amount of money as Hellboy.

Episode #257: 3 Degrees of Chris Cooper

March 18th, 2019
  • Breach
  • Coming Through The Rye
  • Adaptation

So many actors aren't appreciated enough for their contributions to the film world.  Today, we hand out another merit badge for being a cool cat of cinema.

Episode #256: Space - The Bechdel Frontier II

March 5th, 2019

GUEST HOST:  VALKYIRE!!!

  • The Cloverfield Paradox
  • Star Trek Beyond

The battle royale continues with space franchises fighting for feminine favor.  As they should:  neglecting half of any public is a bad idea, no?  This skirmish felt like a David & Goliath situation, but maybe not the way some of you were thinking.  Give it  listen!!

Links:  Death at a Funeral, Guardians of the Galaxy, GotG v2, Red (has links for LOTR episodes),

Notes:  We breezed right past Don Cheadle/Terence Howard as well as Tessa Thompson, Idris Elba & Chewitel Ejiofor in Marvel before Black Panther.  That still only brings the total to 8 with Zoe Saldana.

Here is a vid of Tenacious D doing the Trek Theme w/lyrics for those who want to hear all of the ending track we used.  Pretty "stellar"!!!

Episode #243: TV Families - Roseanne

August 27th, 2018
  • Ladybird (Laurie Metcalf)
  • 10 Cloverfield Lane (John Goodman)
  • Poison Ivy (Sara Gilbert)

A long overdue resurrection for this series, we ended up with a super relevant episode!  3 titles that you're not likely to find near each other on the shelf at the movie store.  Strangely, Poison Ivy was on a Leo DiCaprio shelf & Matt didn't even see him while watching it!  Video store mean nothing to you? - alright:  they won't be in the same genre batch (line?) or page on your streaming service...  This was a fun one & covers some interesting ground between the 3 movies.  Have at it!

BT Dubs - Clov Lane made a bit over 30 million outside the U.S., meaning it made nearly 7 times its budget.

Episode #241: Numbers & Stuff

August 1st, 2018
  • 2 Days in the Valley
  • The Number 23
  • Lucky Number Slevin

A series we've wanted to do for years, this unifies varied movies by a linking factor of numbers.  Every one of these has significant spoilers that we avoided in talking about the plots themselves, but we dug deep into some of the concepts presented.  Enjoy!!

Links:  MonsterLeonRed (has other Bruce Willis & Morgan Freeman links),

Here is the "Who's On 1st" routine from Abbott & Costello (NOT Laurel & Hardy, Matt's never watched movies from EITHER duo!! )

Rotten Tomatoes Scores for those who care but don't care to search:        - Valley: Critic 59% positive at 60% avg, Audience 54% positive at 60% avg.      - #23: Critic 8% positive at 35% avg, Audience 56% positive at 64% avg.

- Slevin: Critic 51% positive at 59% avg, Audience 87% positive at 76% avg.

Episode #237: Stranger Things 2

June 4th, 2018

Stranger Things was a mammoth of a series when it debuted.  It seems most saw the 2nd season when it appeared, the the hubbub quickly died down despite it doing a pretty durned fantastic job in creating another strong arc for the characters we've come to love & some noobs as well.  We wanted to dig deeper than Matt's last TVsode when he almost scratched the surface with a drive-by thumbs up for ST 2.  Really looking at the overall structure, it deserves far more credit than it got for changing it up without becoming something else.

Episode #222: Epic-sode XI: IT (mini-series)

October 28th, 2017

*Some broad comparisons to the 2017 movie as well, but not full-on or any spoilers.

It's amazing how much we can appreciate (& forgive) something we watched growing up until it is done better.  Ooops - episode spoilers!  It's not quite hatorade, but there may be some critiques of this 90's television mini-series when scary on tv was pretty safe.  We hope you'll find the deeper look at it almost as entertaining as the series itself was.  Perhaps more entertaining?  Who knows?  You will; after you listen...

Episode #216: Epic Epic-sode III Girl Kicked Hornet

July 29th, 2017

GUEST HOST:  GODFREY!!

This week we finish our Dragon Tattoo Trilogy of the extended Swedish films.

Not much to say here -

Some episodes mentioned: Kill Bill, Let the Right One In (Swedish version)

Here's the Blind Melon video that shows why we used it for the intro.

Episode #214: Epic Epic-sode I - Girl w/the Dragon Tattoo

July 3rd, 2017

GUEST HOST:  GODFREY!!

The modern era has made it far easier for movies to be seen worldwide.  Through that, audiences in the U.S. have better access than ever to see movies that have been remade from overseas.  This series of films is pretty darn sweet (so far - as Matt hasn't seen them all yet!).  Join us as we pay tribute to another god of the silver screen stripped away from us too soon...

Links: Michael Nyqvist: John Wick, Girl in the Book.  Others mentioned - Flatliners, Mads Mikkelsen, Robin Hood, Prometheus, Grosse Pointe Blank.

Notes:  Okay, Matt was wrong about Colin & Mads pronunciation; he was right about William Baldwin (only so much to be proud of there).  We try to get it right, but can't always nail it in the moment.  Also - Ace of Base are Swedes, too!!

Episode #213: Remakes - Manchurian Candidate

June 19th, 2017

1962 vs. 2004/

So many times a generation hates a remake because they are attached to the original.  Many times we have challenged that attachment.  This movie is a titan of its time; on IMDB it is ranked 80% compared to 66% for the remake - since we didn't mention it.  Rotten Tomatoes: 87 critic/78 audience; remake - 71 critic/64 audience, the original with a larger consensus of critic & audience agreement.  How does Matt's opinion align with the errday public?  Tune in to see!!

Links:  Angela Lansbury: Last Unicorn.  Johnathan Demme: Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia (also Denzel).  Denzel Washington: Bone Collector, Much Ado About Nothing, Book of Eli, Malcolm X.  Liev Schreiber: Spotlight.  Meryl Streep: Fantastic Mr Fox.  Jeffrey Wright: Casino Royale.

also mentioned: True Grit & The Quiet American.

Episode #211: Shuffle of DEATH!!

May 21st, 2017

GUEST HOST:  GODFREY!!!

  • Frailty/
  • Red State/

It's not always the answer to discuss the recently deceased, but sometimes you just dive in headlong to confront the loss.  Immediately after hearing about Powers Booth, Godfrey & Matt rewatched Tombstone.  It then became clear what we needed to do.

These 2 films are connected beyond (now) dead actors by sharing a religious driving force behind terrible actions.  The 3rd movie that will in turn be its own episode next week is more about questioning reality.  You could also say it comes from Satan - so there's your religious tie-in.

Links are forthcoming, as the need to get this episode out is the most important part.  Exhaustion wants your host to get away from the computer chair after massive bouts of editing & re-recording additional material.

NOTES:  Here's the kangaroo puncher link.  Sweet ass!!
Just to be crystal clear:  we love Christian Bale & have said so in multiple episodes.  Here we speak of him in Reign of Fire as the only source of talent at that moment for Matt.  If you doubt our love, here are links: Batman Begins, Dark Knight, American Psycho, The Prestige, Equilibrium.

LINKS:  Powers Boothe: Rapid Fire, Sin City, Tombstone (also Paxton).  Bill Paxton: Weird Science, Twister, True Lies, Near Dark, Aliens, Predator 2.  Matthew McConaughey: Mud, Dazed & Confused.  Kevin Smith: Clerks II, Dogma.

Here is the link to the full song for Seasons  (a great recent live version) that ended the episode: a beautifully crafted song.  RIP

Episode #210: Remakes for Debate III

May 5th, 2017

Death Game (1977) versus Knock Knock (2015)

It should be noted up front that the Sluts LOVE John Wick (& #2!).  Here is that episode as evidence.  Not sure how it wasn't mentioned, to be honest.

Right, right - onto the actual episode description.  Matt compares a remake with a different name.  Were they distancing themselves from the original (like Disney from the original Tron?) despite having many from the old film as producers?  The old title does kinda sound like a slasher title...
If nothing else, these might sell themselves with women invading homes as the plot.  Some who have seen the older film may want to defend it, but we'd be curious if it feels the same to watch it today after 40 years.  Does the new version offer a different feel, or enough of a similar feel?  Tune in & find out!

Notes:  When he said Medea, he meant the Greek tragedy, not the modern comedy movie tragedies.

Links:  coming soon. (grin)

Episode #201: Stranger Things Spoiler-sode

January 1st, 2017

GUEST HOST:  CHRIS FRED!!!

The whipped cream on top of our last episode, we delve way past Balrog territory on the Stranger Things tip.  If the title is not enough - WARNING!!  Do NOT listen to this episode unless you have finished the 1st Season of the show currently available.

What else to say?  We get to be clear on why we dig this action...  Happy 2017, people!

Episode #196: Still Scary part II

October 24th, 2016

GUEST HOST:  BOB FOSTER

  • Candyman
  • The Thing

We made an episode about movies for kids that can give you nightmares - here is the LINK for that...  What about kids seeing movies they are not old enough to handle?  These movies actually caused nightmares for Matt & his co-host.  Carrying over from our last episode, the creepiness of these works of terror persist in making you squirm in your seat a bit (if not a lot).  Cut off your hand and throw on a coat as we take you on another scary ride to round out October!!

Music note:  the Big Trouble in Little China track is from an artist called 331 Erock.  You can buy that album at CDBaby or on I-tunes.  Here one of many Halloween tributes he has done:  Halloween 2015.  All his songs kick ass!!

Note: Matt realized after that he mixed Conan the Destroyer with Red Sonja as he watched all 3 of those movies so much growing up:  Sandahl Bergman is the villain, not Sarah Douglass, and Mako is in the 2 Conan films.  We left that bit in there to show our mortality, that we are not the perfect beings that editing can have you believe.

Kurt Russell: Stargate (that page links to all other Russell episodes)
John Carpenter:  They Live (also Keith David), HalloweenBig Trouble in Lil China.
Ennio Morricone:  In The Line of FireFistful of Dollars.
