Episode #211: Shuffle of DEATH!!

May 21st, 2017

GUEST HOST:  GODFREY!!!

  • Frailty/
  • Red State/

It's not always the answer to discuss the recently deceased, but sometimes you just dive in headlong to confront the loss.  Immediately after hearing about Powers Booth, Godfrey & Matt rewatched Tombstone.  It then became clear what we needed to do.

These 2 films are connected beyond (now) dead actors by sharing a religious driving force behind terrible actions.  The 3rd movie that will in turn be its own episode next week is more about questioning reality.  You could also say it comes from Satan - so there's your religious tie-in.

Links are forthcoming, as the need to get this episode out is the most important part.  Exhaustion wants your host to get away from the computer chair after massive bouts of editing & re-recording additional material.

NOTES:  Here's the kangaroo puncher link.  Sweet ass!!
Just to be crystal clear:  we love Christian Bale & have said so in multiple episodes.  Here we speak of him in Reign of Fire as the only source of talent at that moment for Matt.  If you doubt our love, here are links:  Batman Begins, Dark Knight, American Psycho, The Prestige, Terminator Salvation.
Here is the link to the full song for Seasons that ended the episode: a beautifully crafted song.  RIP

Episode #210: Remakes for Debate III

May 5th, 2017

Death Game (1977) versus Knock Knock (2015)

It should be noted up front that the Sluts LOVE John Wick (& #2!).  Here is that episode as evidence.  Not sure how it wasn't mentioned, to be honest.

Right, right - onto the actual episode description.  Matt compares a remake with a different name.  Were they distancing themselves from the original (like Disney from the original Tron?) despite having many from the old film as producers?  The old title does kinda sound like a slasher title...
If nothing else, these might sell themselves with women invading homes as the plot.  Some who have seen the older film may want to defend it, but we'd be curious if it feels the same to watch it today after 40 years.  Does the new version offer a different feel, or enough of a similar feel?  Tune in & find out!

Notes:  When he said Medea, he meant the Greek tragedy, not the modern comedy movie tragedies.

Links:  coming soon. (grin)

Episode #201: Stranger Things Spoiler-sode

January 1st, 2017

GUEST HOST:  CHRIS FRED!!!

The whipped cream on top of our last episode, we delve way past Balrog territory on the Stranger Things tip.  If the title is not enough - WARNING!!  Do NOT listen to this episode unless you have finished the 1st Season of the show currently available.

What else to say?  We get to be clear on why we dig this action...  Happy 2017, people!

Episode #196: Still Scary part II

October 24th, 2016

GUEST HOST:  BOB FOSTER

  • Candyman
  • The Thing

We made an episode about movies for kids that can give you nightmares - here is the LINK for that...  What about kids seeing movies they are not old enough to handle?  These movies actually caused nightmares for Matt & his co-host.  Carrying over from our last episode, the creepiness of these works of terror persist in making you squirm in your seat a bit (if not a lot).  Cut off your hand and throw on a coat as we take you on another scary ride to round out October!!

Music note:  the Big Trouble in Little China track is from an artist called 331 Erock.  You can buy that album at CDBaby or on I-tunes.  Here one of many Halloween tributes he has done:  Halloween 2015.  All his songs kick ass!!

Note: Matt realized after that he mixed Conan the Destroyer with Red Sonja as he watched all 3 of those movies so much growing up:  Sandahl Bergman is the villain, not Sarah Douglass, and Mako is in the 2 Conan films.  We left that bit in there to show our mortality, that we are not the perfect beings that editing can have you believe.

Kurt Russell: Stargate (that page links to all other Russell episodes)
John Carpenter:  They Live (also Keith David), HalloweenBig Trouble in Lil China.
Ennio Morricone:  In The Line of FireFistful of Dollars.

Here's Baby Time.  You can find Auralnauts Star Wars from there! :)

Episode # 189: TVsode I

July 23rd, 2016

What's this you ask??  It's a bit o' TV Time!!

While setting up for a delayed episode, we opted to give you a slice of what we watch when we aren't doin' flicks for you lovely folks.  The majority of these shows are in fact Netflix original content, as they have been leading the pack in creating original ideas and remaking a thing or two that failed.  There are some cable shows mentioned also that Matt recently finished (Echo Base didn't quite get to finishing SOA together).  This decade is fast becoming a new Golden Age of television-style serial shows.

INTRO/OUTRO:  Death Bed Confession - get their stuff on iTunes, Spirit, Google Play, Pandora.  Awesome band from Denver!!

BTW, Chris & Matt are working through the 3rd Season of Arrow.  Chris couldn't get through the Flash, but Matt really dug it (it's worth getting through the 1st half for the 2nd half of the 1st season).  Like Netflix, the 2 shows have different tones, so it doesn't feel like the same show with different costumes (except the certain writing moments when it does ;) ).

EDIT 8/21: Matt finished Arrow S3 - a nice ramp-up over the season; he almost gave up, glad he didn't.  He also finished Stranger Things & it is greeeaaaatt!!!  Stick it through for the 2nd half.

Here is Rachel Bloom's video:  F*ck Me Ray Bradbury

Here is the filthy Deadwood vid:  CS

Thankfully, someone also put the Robot Chicken clips together: White Wine

Episode # 179: Resurrection I’d Rather Watch

February 29th, 2016

Flatliners vs. The Lazarus Effect

Some tales are told constantly in film:  the star-crossed lovers, the underdog sports team, the guy who invented Islam (Zuckerberg or Al Gore, can't remember).  Why beat a dead horse when you can just Bring it Back to Life?!  1990 dukes it out with 2015 to see who is better at loving the dead.

Here is the link for Joe's Falling Down Episode with us.

Here are links for Kiefer: Phone Booth, Lost Boys, and Young Guns.
Kevin Bacon: full links on Episode 186.  Julia Roberts: Confessions of a Dangerous MindCloser, and Hook.

Episode # 178: The Coen Brothers Chapter III

February 14th, 2016
Barton Fink/
Hudsucker Proxy/
Blood Simple/
Our last chapter in the bulk Coens podcast saga (links for 1 & 2 below).  The 1st decade of the Coens already showed tremendous talent and a diverse storyteller's collection of style.  With this trio, they poke fun at Hollywood, industry, and begin with a serious take on film noir.  Before Fargo & Lebowski, these directors/writers and their actors were at the top of their game.  Behold, as David & Matt carry you over this puddle of joy - we aren't ruining our coats, after all.  Our lucky quarters are in there.
There was actually a remake of Blood Simple done by Yimou Zhang (director of Hero, which we discussed in the Hero title link) we did not mention.  That's how good that story is - it has been remade, but not by elves.
The 1st 2 Coens episodes:  Coens ICoens II.  Also links for No Country and True Grit
Key & Peele:  here is Text Confusion.  Could not find the magic negro janitors.

For inquiring minds:  Olive Kittredge with Frances McDormand is on HBO GO, not Amazon.

Episode #174: Mad about Mads Mikkelsen

December 20th, 2015
BEHOLD!  The triumphant return of CHRIS!!

Here is another episode with 3 degrees of that guy/gal.  Mads Mikkelsen has built quite an audience - known as Madsturbators - despite a limited number of films in the U.S. since the 1st one we are talking about.  Though he is a hero of Danish cinema, it was television that brought him back to many of us in recent years.

Join us as we push our envelope further by devoting some time to talking about TV (as always, no spoilers).  Time schedules made it so we were only able to cover 2 films, but we will give you some lowdown on A Royal Affair after we get a chance to glance at it.
For the Fannibals -
Here is the Scott Thompson skit that Matt almost quoted correctly:  Dinosaurs
For those Bound to Bond -
Here are links for 2 of the 3 documentaries on the 2-dvd set for Casinoarrow-10x10.png Royale:  Becoming Bond.  Bond for Real.  The 3rd is blocked by MGM, so go rent it from your local video store.. the strongest of the docs is about Bond Girls.  A fascinating look at the changing nature of the characters by the actors themselves.  Worth the time and more directly insightful than we are here in our podcast tower on gender norms.

If you're still reading this:  good work, you're a trooper.  The music overwhelming the (obviously) American trailer for the Hunt linked up top is a perfect example of what we're talking about compared to the movie itself.

Episode #169: Summer Summary Slut Spectacular

September 25th, 2015
Avengers: Age of Ultron/
Mad Max:  Fury Road/
Jurassic World/
Terminator Genysis/
Ant-Man/
Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation/
Straight Outta Compton (now fully discussed in #180!!)/
Ex Machina/

*also a bit of TV hero talk - not something we do a lot..*

We mention Pitch Perfect 2 & Tomorrowland, though we had not seen them.

Another blockbuster parade has come & gone.  Now we deliver to you our list of what made this summer worth watching.  While having its fair share of strikes & gutters, this year nevertheless delivered.

Marvel is now in full swing and the other studios are frantically striving to touch that high water mark.  One could argue that there’s never been a better time to be a movie goer.  Action, sci-fi, adventure, drama, intrigue, heist & heart alike;  Heck, even a Jedi will crave these things come the end of the year!  We sluts be fans.
What are we fans of all we discuss, you ask?

Well, tune in & find out.  Come on, dooo ittt!! Listen, we're heeere!!

Episode #166: End of the World

July 25th, 2015
Do you think you're going to die?  Sure, we all do..  but how?  HOW?!?!
Whether it's monkeys or comet zombies or even the deadly Motaba virus, all have us in their apocalyptic cross-hairs.  How you cope with this information is entirely up to you.  You could fight back, go back in time or pop on down to the mall and finally nab those amazing shoes you always wanted but couldn't afford.  Ya know...the ones that are $300 FUCKING DOLLARS?!

Oh, and we made multiple references to the Clerks animated cartoon this episode, so here's a treat for you all:  Leonardo is caught in the grip of an Outbreak of Randal's imagination and Patrick Swayze either does or doesn't work in the new pet store

Here is a link for the original french film that inspired 12 Monkeys: La Jetee

Episode #161: Remakes Carrie

May 17th, 2015
Carrie (1976) -vs- Carrie (2013)
With Crypticon just around the corner for us, we couldn't resist hopping back on the Remakes train.  We have compared samurai to cowboysvampires to...well...vampires; we've steered this labor-of-love locomotive across many parts of the globe.  Now it's time to steer it back in time for Senior Prom.

Carrie has become virtually synonymous with the experience that is high school and the horrible times that many suffer during it.  From getting covered in pig's blood to "They're all gonna laugh at you," most are familiar with Carrie's tale of woe.  As a character more than a few of us relate to, it was inevitable it would be made again.

Nowadays, many discredit remakes without seeing them, but this time the new blood has some cool surprises under its puffy satin shoulders.  Try to calm your murderous rage long enough to see which version comes out on top.

Episode #156: More Robot Than Robot

March 8th, 2015
With CHAPPiE hitting theaters this week, it seemed the perfect time to roll out our "Robotics" episode!  A topic that's captivated readers & audiences for generations, mechanoids gone monsters often reflect how humanity has or may go wrong.  Are these the droid movies you're looking for?  The answer is yes:  3 different decade & budget perspectives on the possibilities & the dangers that come with them.
If you haven't already, go waaayy back to check out Frtiz Lang's masterpiece Metropolis
After that, check out Rahzel (who we referred to randomly) from The Roots.  After THAT, look at this alternate Short Circuit series trailer.
Correction:  we forgot to mention the actual skydiving movie the Short Circuit writing duo did - Drop Zone with Wesley Snipes.

Episode #155: 80’s Teens Rue the Day

February 8th, 2015
Okay, sure... kids saved the day countless times and we talked about that plenty, but what about when teens DIDN'T?

What about those college kids who turned up the Heat on that Top Secret government project that almost opened The Doors to their own Tombstones?

Or when that Young Gun just needed a Few Good Men to Stand By Him to help Flat-line a couple of Firstborns in that Dark City of Santa Carla?  And hoo boy, some Sleepers will Rush in and do anything for love.  Oh, what a night that was...  You will be Blown Away.

We had WAY too much fun this week, so we had to cut the episode in two.  We also kinda went overboard in our appreciation of what will end up being the 3rd film in our next episode.

What's that?  What is it?  Well, you'll just have to tune in two weeks from now & find out.  It is a Gleaming jewel in pile of Non-Very Bad Things during the Legend-ary 80's.  Til then, we're confident you'll savor every nostalgia-soaked minute of this week's offering.

Episode #152: In A Word: Interview

January 11th, 2015
We were tempted to churn this episode out a couple of weeks ago, when a certain hackneyed debacle was the topic of much discussion.  As it turned out, the theater ban lasted less than a week, so it didn't matter (in this country).

We didn't want to spend the entire episode in the Pitts, so what would've been an episode comprised of our sluttish commentary on censorship, cyber-terrorism & entertainment ethics morphed into a much more upbeat chapter for our "In A Word" series.

So just sit back, relax and come along as we Weave this good ole' fashioned Cruise in your mind.  Also, we made wild Rice.  There's no clever (& short) link for Anne Rice.. sorry.

Episode #149: Bad-Ass Women:Part II

December 14th, 2014
In the vault of Female Film Bad-Assery, there are those who reign supreme as queens amongst the gentry.  Ellen Ripley & The Bride... we have mentioned, but there are more.  The mountain is lofty, but its population is far from limited.

Two more women join the ranks of this already formidable matriarchal monarchy.  Resolute, deadly & realistic in their portrayal, both have shaped the criteria by which so many contemporary female protagonists are judged.  Keep to the right & aim for the knees as we bring you more Bad-Assdom.

We referred to a site that broke down a scene in Silence of the Lambs.  Also, we called it by the wrong name.  Here is the link:  Every Frame a Painting
